Processing Technology and Operational Cost Assessment for Waste Liquid Crystal Display Products

Absrtact
The purpose of this study was to investigate the best available technology for waste liquid crystal display (LCD) products and its operational cost. In turn, the results of this study were expected to provide Taiwan EPA a feasible recycling solution for the ever-increasing amount of the collected waste LCD products. The study first selected five LCD products further investigation: LCD TVs, monitors, laptop computers, cellular phones and digital cameras. The probabilities of discarding and annually generated numbers of units of these five products were then estimated based on governmental statistics and past research. Besides, through on-site visiting and questionnaires for recycling plants as well as LCD product manufacturers, two recycling strategies were proposed and discussed in a technical consulting meeting. Based on the conclusions of the consulting meeting, for the short term, a procedure composed of “dissembling, shredding and glass recycling” for green construction materials was recommended by study. For the long run, the study suggested the maximization of recycling profit as the target of the recycling processe, as a process of “dissembling, shredding, ITO recovery and glass recycling.” Through this project, the trends of LCD products in the future market have also been collected and analyzed. According to this study, the technology of recycling will also through dissembling, shredding and material recovery. In the future, LCD will still dominate the market. On the other hand demand for PDP is shrinking. But OLED market will grow steadily.
